The workshop

For JEF filmfestival we made a 3d/animation workshop for children aged 8-12.

The children got to experience first hand the main step into creating a character and animating it.

Different Elements of 3D design

  • Concept stage: Designing a character on paper based on an premade drawing
  • Colouring stage: Using a leading 3D software called Substance Painter to colour their 3D character by adding realistic textures. Also getting to know the layer based workflow that is used in a lot of designing software.

Second stage

Design a Background for the character on paper
  • Drawing some 2D attributes in Adobe Photoshop on the fully rendered character they made in Substance Painter
  • Putting everything together in Adobe Character Animator and have fun using the facial motion capture to record an animation
  • Showing of their results on the big screen to the other children
